Suits | Jenny/Rachel
They had seen each other exactly three times. None of these three times it was because they wanted to see each other, because they liked each other or had planned for it. But it weren’t coincidences either. In fact, all of these events had the same reason. Mike Ross.
Based on this it really was something new when they met again, this time out of pure coincidence.
It was late in the afternoon. Jenny had just finished work and was headed home, when she decided that she could swing by that coffee place she like so much and take a cup for the way, just because she felt like it.
Later she’d definitely think about that a lot and smile while doing so. If she hadn’t had that feeling, she wouldn’t have bumped into Rachel, who was about to leave the well heated place when she opened the door.
Rachel had another two, maybe three, hours of work ahead and she had needed caffeine badly. Almost as badly as she had needed five minutes to clear her head and since she wasn’t willing to call eating over a file while searching a database lunch break she decided she earned that five minutes.
So here they were, facing each other in the doorway. There was some pop song playing in the background, too faint to be distracting or disturbing conversation but loud enough to be noticed. It was nice background noise.
Rachel wasn’t sure if she should say anything but gladly she didn’t have to start this conversation. She didn’t even have to think about it any longer than a second. It was then that Jenny’s voice cut through the silence between them before it could get uncomfortable.
“Rachel? Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while.” The blonde smiled and it looked so genuine and friendly, that Rachel couldn’t help but smile herself. “Good to see you.”
“Yes, good to see you, too.” Last time that they had actually seen each other had been on that date with Mike and Kyle. Rachel remembered all too well how that went. She hadn’t felt right, she hadn’t even wanted to go, but she had been there and felt out of place the whole time, even though she had gotten along fine with Jenny.
She couldn’t tell how the Blonde might have experienced that evening, but she had been friendly and even now her behavior seemed honest. There was no hidden spite, no underlying resent. Not that it mattered much anymore what had happened that evening. Rachel was one of the few people who knew who Mike was dating now and that wasn’t the blonde woman who currently stood in front of her.
“Are you still working?” Jenny knew how much Mike had worked and probably still did and she figured a paralegal wouldn’t have it that much better. It was still early in the world of the law.
“Yes.” Rachel started nodding and her hair moved with the motion, so that she had to tuck it back. “I just wanted to grab a coffee.” She held her cup up a little, cocked her head and smiled. “Guess I’ll have to be going, we’re kind of blocking the entrance anyway.”
Rachel looked behind her, but nobody was approaching the door from inside. It was only a matter of time though until someone would want to go out or in and in that case they were really going to be in the way of said hypothetical being.
Jenny looked a bit surprised because she hadn’t contemplated the fact that she might be an obstacle for others. Everything she had seen was the woman in front of her and she suddenly realized that had been enough to forget there actually was a world around her existing that didn’t just contain two people. “Yeah, sure.” She made way for Rachel to pass her and heard her say goodbye. It only took a step of her own, before she turned around again. “Wait.”
Rachel stopped but she didn’t turn around. Instead she only turned her head to her left, just much enough that Jenny could guess the expression on her face but not outright see it. It looked like she was smiling and that was all the reassurance she needed, if she ever had needed any. All her life she had been the one asking the tough questions, jumping into things others would avoid like the plague, because she knew these things bug you until the end of your life. More than any rejection or failure would ever hurt.
“You want to go for a drink later?”
Rachel wasn’t like her. She contemplated her moves and she always was that little bit too late. Always hating herself when she considered for a minute too long again just to find that it was, in fact, already too late and she had missed her chance. Like she had done with Mike. It might have looked like she only wanted what she couldn’t have, but it wasn’t like that. Sometimes you just realize how you should have decided when you can’t have one of all those options anymore and you suddenly know that would have been yours.
This time perhaps it could be different. Jenny was nice, a little bit like Mike, what was the reason she thought they would work out. But they hadn’t, because it turned out Mike didn’t want this. But obviously I do, she thought.
Her head nodded slowly, almost on it’s own accord, before she answered.
“Yes. I do.”

This was going to have more sex in it, I swear, but I got to it and just couldn’t.

I can’t write it, even though this is the one pairing I wouldn’t feel at all awkward reading (somehow reading about women/sex freaks me out and I can’t explain it) but it just wouldn’t work. Maybe some other time.

Jenny/Rachel

When Jenny had told Mike he needed to make a choice all those months ago, she hadn’t thought it would have ended up like this. She thought he would have actually chosen between her and Rachel, but she wasn’t going to complain, not now. She thought back quickly to that night she’d insisted on a double date, the way she might have overreacted because her nerves were already wearing thin because of how obviously attractive Rachel was. She had forgone the usual insecurities and jumped right over into the way too attracted to my rival territory and that had surprised her.

Rachel had been nice to her all evening, they’d gotten on just fine but she hadn’t been able to settle, suddenly aware (and feeling guilty) that she might be more interested in her than Mike. Every time Rachel’s hand ended up on her arm during some anecdote, every smile or roll of her eyes had had Jenny on edge.

Now, though, there wasn’t an issue. It had turned out that Mike had been telling the truth. There wasn’t anything going on with him and Rachel. That hadn’t been why he was so distracted. Rachel wasn’t the person at work Jenny should have been worrying about. When they’d broken up, Rachel had been nice enough to call and ask her if she wanted to do drinks again, just the two of them this time. No Kyle, because it turned out that Rachel had just needed to find a date and he’d been pestering her for one.

Jenny hadn’t been able to say no, even though she knew she should. Becoming friends with someone she was stupidly attracted to was never a good idea, but then again, she’d done it with Mike and had managed to keep up that friendship, even after a failed attempt at a relationship. She didn’t have to worry about that now, though. She could look at Rachel like that all she wanted, she could run her fingers through her hair like she’d caught herself thinking about because they’d gone back to hers from the bar, a little tipsy and were now horizontal on her couch. Jenny had chanced it, a lingering touch on her arm before turning to leave and then Rachel had caught her hand and asked if she wanted to come back. There was no doubt about the way she had meant it but Jenny wondered if she would have taken it that way if she hadn’t already been thinking about it.

There had been no stopping, no checking if this was what they wanted to do, just quick kisses in the back of the cab before cooling it off quickly for the walk up to her apartment. Finally, Jenny was able to touch her how she wanted to, to trail kisses down her neck, under her slightly perfect blouse, that now she though about it, had been fully buttoned at the start of the evening, before her first trip to the bathroom.

“Thanks Rachel. You are amazing.”

That’s my version of how the most awkward double date in human history should have ended. And I’m not even talking about Mike and Kyle yet.
